Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI)

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is a home of science program selection, grant administration, planning, scheduling, and public outreach activities for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). STScI provides data archive and distribution for all of NASA's optical/UV missions, including HST. STScI is also the science and operations centre for the 6.5 m James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

Hubble data used to look 10,000 years into the future

— 27 Oct 2010 10:44 | Astronomy

The globular star cluster Omega Centauri has caught the attention of sky watchers ever since the ancient astronomer Ptolemy first catalogued it 2,000 years ago. Ptolemy, however, thought…

Pinwheel of star birth

— 19 Oct 2010 13:59 | Astronomy

Though the universe is chock full of spiral-shaped galaxies, no two look exactly the same. This face-on spiral galaxy, called NGC 3982, is striking for its rich tapestry of star birth,…

First use of cosmic lens to probe dark energy

— 20 Aug 2010 09:51 | Astronomy

Astronomers have devised a new method for measuring perhaps the greatest puzzle of our universe - dark energy. This mysterious force, discovered in 1998, is pushing our universe apart…

Out of whack planetary system offers clues to a disturbed past

— 25 May 2010 12:01 | Astronomy

Astronomers are reporting today the discovery of a planetary system way out of tilt, where the orbits of two planets are at a steep angle to each other. This surprising finding will…

Hubble finds star eating a planet

— 20 May 2010 15:54 | Astronomy

The hottest known planet in the Milky Way galaxy may also be its shortest-lived world. The doomed planet is being eaten by its parent star, according to observations made by a new instrument…

Hubble catches heavyweight runaway star speeding from 30 Doradus

— 11 May 2010 20:35 | Astronomy

A heavy runaway star is rushing away from a nearby stellar nursery at more than 250,000 miles an hour, a speed that will get you to the Moon and back in two hours. The runaway is the…

Pluto's white, dark-orange, and charcoal-black terrain captured by Hubble

— 7 Feb 2010 16:56 | Astronomy

NASA has released the most detailed and dramatic images ever taken of the distant dwarf planet Pluto. The images from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope show an icy, mottled, dark molasses-coloured…

Suspected asteroid collision leaves trailing debris

— 3 Feb 2010 12:34 | Astronomy

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has observed a mysterious X-shaped debris pattern and trailing streamers of dust that suggest a head-on collision between two asteroids. Astronomers have…

Hubble captures the recent impact on Jupiter

— 24 Jul 2009 22:47 | Astronomy

During the past several days the discovery of the Australian amateur astronomer Anthony Wesley about a comet or asteroid impact on Jupiter is going to overshadow even the solar eclipse…

Refined Hubble constant narrows possible explanations for dark energy

— 8 May 2009 05:19 | Astronomy

Whatever dark energy is, explanations for it have less wiggle room following a Hubble Space Telescope observation that has refined the measurement of the universe's present expansion…
